BUTTERFLY TAILS AND LARGE-EYED GLOBE EYES
Butterfly tail globe eyes
A wide range of forms are found in the variety termed "globe eye"; the standard defines a form that is close to the veiltail, whereas this fish with metallic yellow/silver-white colouration is closer to the fantail and has a butterfly tail (short, wide and spread horizontally). Shown at BAS 2001.
Chinese red-white metallic butterfly tails; the lower image shows the clear, horizontal lie of the tail when seen from the rear. (Hong Kong 2003).
Large-eyed globe eyes
These fish are from a strain with larger-than-usual eye development (about 30%-40% larger) and with a variety of finnage types, some being long and flowing whilst others have short, fantail-type finnage. Silver-white metallic colouration, with red irises in many individuals. (Hong Kong 2003).
The fish at top left and top right have cone-shaped rather than spherical eyes, as called for by the standard. Having seen hundreds of globe eyes in Hong Kong over the past 22 years (as at 2003), this is the only strain seen by the Website Author in which some individuals have cone-shaped eyes; perhaps the standard should reflect this reality. (Hong Kong 2003).
